SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is an email authentication method designed to detect forging sender addresses during the delivery of the email. SPF allows the domain owner to specify which mail servers are permitted to send email on behalf of their domain. When an email is received, the receiving mail server checks the SPF record of the sender’s domain to verify that the email was sent from an authorized mail server.
DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) is an email security standard designed to ensure that messages are not altered in transit between the sending and receiving servers. It uses a digital signature attached to the email’s header. The receiving server can use this signature to verify that the email was indeed sent from the specified domain and that its content has not been tampered with during transit.
DMARC (Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting & Conformance) is an email authentication, policy, and reporting protocol. It builds on SPF and DKIM protocols, allowing domain owners to declare how their domain is supposed to handle email (e.g., quarantine, reject, or none) and provide a way for email receivers to report back to the sender about messages that pass and/or fail DMARC evaluation.
MTA-STS (Mail Transfer Agent-Strict Transport Security) is a security standard designed to enhance email transport security by enabling email sending servers to declare that they can send and receive emails securely using Transport Layer Security (TLS). This declaration helps prevent interception and tampering of emails by attackers through man-in-the-middle (MITM) attacks.
DMARC Reporting is a feature of the DMARC protocol that enables domain owners to receive reports from email receivers about the messages that pass and/or fail DMARC evaluation. These reports provide valuable information about the authenticity of the emails being sent from the domain, allowing domain owners to identify and address potential security issues, such as domain spoofing or unauthorized use of their domain for sending emails.
We tried many other providers, all were cheaper and all were a false economy. It’s like booking that cheap flight, sure the ticket is cheap – but you then have to pay for a decent seat, a bag, a meal. Eventually, you realise you should have just taken a flight on a real airline!
